Bicycle Imports Down Slightly in April

A total of 48,816 bicycles were imported during April 2014, down from 55,178 last year. April is traditionally the lowest month of the year for imports, being just before the first new model year bikes start landing in May.
Almost all of the decrease was in adult bicycles, which fell from 37,870 units to 31,755.
Despite this fall, the current financial year to date is still tracking to be one of the highest on record. For children’s bikes it is currently very slightly higher compared to the first 10 months of last financial year.
For adult bikes it is down on last financial year, with 761,803 adult bikes to date this financial year compared to 827,515 for the first 10 months of last financial year.
Last financial year a total of 1,416,413 bicycles were imported, which was a record number, exceeding the previous record of 1,334,442 set in 2007-8.
Australian Customs collect bicycle import figures which are then collated by Bicycle Industries Australia (BIA). Full data including comparison tables and charts are made available to BIA members only. BIA has kindly permitted us to publish summary figures and commentary when each new month’s data is released.
