Import Numbers Staying Strong

Bicycle import numbers for the first two months of 2014 were down slightly on last year, but still quite strong for the financial year to date, when considering that last financial year saw a record number of 1,416,413 bicycles imported into Australia.

In January 2014, 78,112 bicycles were imported, which is slightly down on 2013’s record year of 80,018, but up on the previous three years.

In February 2014, 55,233 bikes were imported, which was down from 62,882 last year.

For the first eight months of this financial year to date 1,020,768 bicycles have been imported. Once again this is down on last year’s record (by 6%), but up on the three years prior to that. All of the drop this financial year can be attributed to adult bike imports, which are down by 65,074 units compared to last financial year to date. Children’s bike imports are up by 4,970 units.

Australian Customs collect bicycle import figures which are then collated by Bicycle Industries Australia (BIA). Full data including comparison tables and charts are made available to BIA members only. BIA have kindly permitted us to publish summary figures and commentary when each new month’s data is released.
