The new Torno crank has been designed by co-owner and 3T art director Gerard Vroomen. It combines the aerodynamic knowledge of 3T with the carbon engineering and production skills of 3T’s sister company THM.
In 2016, THM merged with 3T, and its super-premium products continue to be highly prized by custom bike builders and leading bike manufacturers trying to create ultra-light special models.
Thanks to its aero-optimized design, the Torno represents the perfect complement to the Strada and Exploro aero frames.
The crank is one of the most complex parts for aerodynamics; the leading edge of your shape becomes the trailing edge 180 degrees later, you have the major influence of the forward speed and the minor influence of the rotational speed, your feet spin by, the frame is right there, the chain runs over the chainring and can’t really be changed aerodynamically.
The crank arms are very thin, (only 12mm at the pedal whereas most other cranks measure 15-17mm) thereby reducing their drag and lowering the Q-factor, so the rider can ride with a more aero foot position. The profile is very deep and elliptical, further cutting down drag. The structural design combines the right crank, spider and carbon axle into one part, increasing stiffness and reducing weight. The new Torno weighs a mere 330g and is offered in the LTD range.
The spider is separated spatially from the drive-side crank for aerodynamic reasons. Structurally however it is integrated with the axle and crank arm as well as the chainring, not only through its four bolts but also via its (patent-pending) countersunk design.
