Ellen Kast and Bill Shook, the pair behind Taiwanese company American Classic, announced the closure of their factory and warehouse last week, citing difficult market conditions and limited OE support.
Founding the business in 1982 they started out making bottle cages, then seatposts then bottom brackets, the latter two items affected by the changing standards of aero frame tube profiles and the raft of new BB standards. They moved on to develop hubs which led to wheelsets which became their staple of their business.
"We thank our AC customers and staff for their support over the years and sincerely regret the impact of these actions," said Shook.
The company is in negotiations to sell its intellectual property, while Shook said he is continuing his design and consulting work.
American Classic's Australian distributor Cassons will support the brand with service and parts while they remain in stock.
