It appears by what I have read or seen in the media recently, that the various well meaning City bike rental schemes are a total failure with bikes being vandalised, trashed or stolen plus a large percentage of helmets gone missing.
"If it works in European Cities it will work here" the was no doubt its proponents battle cry!
The reason why it was doomed to failure here was that Europe has a bike culture, Australia has a car culture. Europeans use the bike for transportation to get from A to B, we use a bike for sport, exercise and fitness plus there are those brave souls who commute. A non bike rider here considers riding a bike as playing Russian Roulette with cars, in Europe the bike and car integrate.
I see these rental bikes scattered around Sydney's inner suburbs most looking like the victims of petty crime, some no doubt rented in good faith by someone, but abandoned in fear of their pedaling life. To some it may have been a good idea but to them I say "We live in Australia not Europe'.
